Yeah, I don't want to do that.

Just wanted to post a few things that have been making me quite happy over the last few days.

1. Punch Drunk Love .

It's my new favorite movie. It's so good. So good. I don't really have the words to describe how it made me feel. It's really aimed at a particular audience though. I would say that it was made specifically for me, but as I don't know PT Anderson very well, I suspect he also made it for other people. If the frogs, songs, and opening sequence of Magnolia were your favorite part of that movie, you'll love this one. I've already seen it twice and I don't see movies twice in theatres. And it's not even open yet in most cities. So if you're lucky enough to have the chance to see it, make sure you grab that opportunity.

2. Badly Drawn Boy.

Tonight! Live! At the Phoenix! Men with Toques! Excellent!

2. Physicists Exposed!

Remember Alan Sokal? He was this idiot physicist who tried to discredit post-modern/sociological theory by getting an article published in a big journal and then claiming that it was nonsense. Anyways, there were hundreds of articles after that by grumpy old men who tried to use the Sokal affair to show how terrible modern theory was. Their arguments usually went something like this: "Blah, Blah, Blah. Relativism sucks. Blah, blah, blah." It pissed me off.

But now, the shoe is on the other foot. A couple of sociology grads interviewed people who knew about string theory to get the jargon, made up a nonsensical theory using it, created a little bit of hype about having great ideas, and got themselves published and got themselves a Ph.D in physics!!! It's quite one thing to "make up" a paper in a discipline that believes facts are constructed anyway. It's another to "make up" a theory in a discipline that believes itself to "reveal" the real world. I wonder if this is going to catch on in the same way that the Sokal Affair did. Either way, I think those people who said that "relativism sucks" have got themselves some 'xplaining to do, if they're going to keep believing that.

Anyways, you can see the thesis abstract here. Ha ha! I feel so redeemed!
